Over the years, it became a significant venue for Rhodesia’s home matches in the Currie Cup before Zimbabwe gained independence in 1980. Following independence, the ground quickly started hosting List A matches and became a hub for international cricket, frequently welcoming Zimbabwe’s national team and visiting squads throughout the 1980s and early 1990s.
In 1992, Zimbabwe attained Test status from the International Cricket Council (ICC). Later the same year, Zimbabwe went on to play the stadium’s inaugural Test match against India. Harare Sports Club also witnessed Zimbabwe’s historic first Test victory in February 1995 against Pakistan.
