IPL 2024: Mitchell Starc Explains His Master Plan Against SRH in 1st Qualifier

Mitchell Starc ended up with the figures of 31/3 in the first qualifier against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Mitchell Starc emerged as the hero for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in their convincing eight-wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the IPL 2024 Qualifier 1 at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

Mitchell Starc’s exceptional bowling display earned him the Player of the Match award, propelling Kolkata Knight Riders into their first IPL final since 2021.

The left-arm pacer wreaked havoc in the SRH top order, claiming three crucial wickets in the powerplay. Travis Head, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Shahbaz Ahmed all fell prey to Starc’s accuracy and pace, leaving SRH reeling at 31/3 after just four overs.

His spell, which included figures of 3/34 at an economy rate of 8.50, effectively dismantled SRH’s batting plans and laid the foundation for KKR’s dominance.

Speaking after the match, Starc explained his strategy:

“We know the powerplay’s significance, especially against teams strong at the top like Hyderabad. Taking early wickets disrupts their middle order. We noticed both teams have dominated with the bat in the powerplay. So, the plan was to swing the ball and keep it on the stumps at a good length. This approach worked well, and our spinners capitalized later. It was a complete bowling performance.”

KKR’s victory marks their fourth IPL final appearance. They will now await the winner of Qualifier 2, scheduled for the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on May 26. Shreyas Iyer’s men will be eager to lift their third IPL title in a highly anticipated final clash.
