Angry Kumar Sangakkara Heads to Third Umpire Room Over Dinesh Karthik’s ‘Not Out’ Call During RR vs RCB Eliminator

Dinesh Karthik was ruled Not Out by the third umpire despite being clearly out.

A controversial leg-before decision regarding the RCB batter Dinesh Karthik by third umpire Anil Chaudhary during the high-pressure IPL 2024 Eliminator between Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bangalore has ignited a debate.

It all happened during the 15th over of RCB’s innings. Dinesh Karthik, facing Avesh Khan, was adjudged leg-before. After consulting his partner, Mahipal Lomror, Dinesh Karthik opted for the DRS review.

Replays showed a slight spike on Ultra-Edge as the ball passed the bat. However, the gap between bat and ball raised eyebrows. The suggestion was that the spike might have been caused by the ball brushing Karthik’s pad before reaching the bat.

The decision to rule Dinesh Karthik not out left commentators fuming. Sunil Gavaskar and Kevin Pietersen were vocal in their criticism.

Adding fuel to the fire, Rajasthan Royals’ head coach, Kumar Sangakkara, displayed his outrage. Upset with the decision, Sangakkara was seen leaving the dugout and heading towards the third umpire’s room, presumably for a discussion. Security personnel intervened and prevented him from going further.

This incident adds to a growing list of umpiring blunders in IPL 2024, raising concerns about the fairness of the tournament.

The BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) is likely to face scrutiny for its officiating choices and may need to implement stricter protocols or consider introducing technology like DRS (Decision Review System) to minimize such errors in the future.
