‘It Will Be Tough’ – Rohit Sharma Gets Emotional Over Rahul Dravid’s Departure as India Head Coach
Rohit Sharma also revealed that he tried to convince Rahul Dravid to stay with the team as the head coach.
Indian skipper Rohit Sharma opened up about his close bond with outgoing head coach Rahul Dravid during a press conference ahead of their T20 World Cup opener against Ireland.
Rahul Dravid, who took charge after India’s disappointing T20 World Cup campaign in 2021, is set to step down after the ongoing ICC event.
Speaking at the Nassau Cricket Stadium in New York, Rohit Sharma, visibly emotional, acknowledged Dravid’s influence on him:
“He was my first captain at the international level,” Sharma said. “He’s a huge role model and someone who’s done so much for Indian cricket. I personally tried to convince him to stay on as coach.”
The Indian captain admitted it would be difficult to see Dravid depart.
“It will be tough to see him go,” Sharma said, his voice thick with emotion.
Rahul Dravid‘s tenure as head coach has been successful. India clinched the Asia Cup in 2023 and reached the finals of the 2023 World Cup under his leadership.
Notably, the BCCI has already released the applications for the new head coach. There have also been reports that Gautam Gambhir is the strong contender to replace Rahul Dravid.
