T20 World Cup: New Zealand Pacer Trent Boult Announces Retirement
Trent Boult has confirmed that this is his last appearance in the T20 World Cup.
New Zealand pace spearhead Trent Boult has announced his retirement from the T20 World Cup after the BlackCaps’ final group stage match against Papua New Guinea on Sunday. The ongoing 2024 edition in the West Indies marks Boult’s swansong in the marquee tournament.
Trent Boult, a veteran of the BlackCaps’ golden generation since his debut in 2011, has been a mainstay in major finals across all formats. The left-arm quick has also featured prominently in four T20 World Cups since 2014.
“This will be my last T20 World Cup,” Boult declared at a press conference following New Zealand’s comprehensive win over Uganda. He offered no further comments on his future with the national team in other formats.
Trent Boult’s central contract with New Zealand Cricket (NZC) expired in 2022, and he opted for lucrative T20 franchise opportunities around the globe. Whether he intends to continue playing for the BlackCaps in any capacity remains unclear.
Dismal T20 World Cup for New Zealand
New Zealand’s hopes of progressing to the Super Eight stage were dashed by defeats in their opening matches. Despite a dominant win against Uganda and a final group game remaining, Afghanistan and West Indies have already secured the top two spots from Group C.
Sunday’s encounter with Papua New Guinea will mark Trent Boult’s final appearance on the T20 World Cup stage. Overall, New Zealand has boasted an impressive record of reaching the T20 World Cup semifinals consistently since 2014.
