Kane Williamson Declines New Zealand Central Contract, Steps Down as T20I and ODI Captain
Kane Williamson has stepped down from T20I and ODI captaincy.
In a surprising decision, talismanic New Zealand batter Kane Williamson has chosen to decline a New Zealand Cricket (NZC) central contract, committing only to Test matches for the BlackCaps this summer.
After a disappointing T20 World Cup 2024 campaign that saw New Zealand exit in the group stages, Kane Williamson has stepped down as captain of both the T20I and ODI teams.
For more than ten years, the 33-year-old batter has been a backbone for New Zealand cricket, playing a crucial role in guiding the team to the semi-finals in seven out of the ten World Cups he has competed in across both formats since 2011.
Williamson will still be available for the Black Caps, with the team scheduled to play eight World Test Championship matches before Christmas and compete in the ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan in February and March 2025.
