Gautam Gambhir to Be Sacked After BGT 2024-25? BCCI Official Drops Bombshell

Gautam Gambhir's coaching role under threat after poor performances, with BCCI revealing he was not the first choice.

The Indian cricket team is going through a tough phase, both at home and overseas. With poor performances piling up, head coach Gautam Gambhir’s position is now under threat. A senior BCCI official revealed that Gambhir was never the first choice for the role after Rahul Dravid stepped down earlier this year.

Gautam Gambhir Was Not the First Choice

According to the BCCI source, Gambhir got the job as a compromise after VVS Laxman, the board’s top pick, could not take up the role.

“He was never the first choice,” the official said. “Some well-known overseas coaches did not want to coach all three formats, so Gambhir was selected. There were also some other reasons behind this decision.”

Since Gambhir’s appointment in July, India’s performance has been disappointing. The team lost a home Test series 3-0 to New Zealand and is now trailing 2-1 in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. The final Test is scheduled to start on January 3 in Sydney.

Poor Communication and Pressure to Perform

Apart from the team’s struggles, Gambhir’s communication with players has also come under criticism. Reports suggest that since his appointment, captain Rohit Sharma has not been able to clearly explain player exclusions, which has led to confusion in the team.

Comparisons are being made with previous coaches Rahul Dravid and Ravi Shastri, whose communication was reportedly much better. The poor form of key players like skipper Rohit Sharma and star batter Virat Kohli has also added to Gambhir’s problems.

With the Champions Trophy scheduled for February-March, Gambhir’s position will depend heavily on how the team performs in the upcoming matches.

If India fails to meet expectations in the Champions Trophy, Gambhir’s role as head coach might come to an end. For now, all eyes are on the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
