Jasprit Bumrah Wants to Take Over Test Captaincy from Rohit Sharma: Report
Jasprit Bumrah leads the race for India's Test captaincy, while a senior player eyes interim leadership amid team challenges.
As Rohit Sharma’s future as India’s Test captain remains uncertain, the search for a new leader appears to have begun. Reports suggest that Jasprit Bumrah, who led the team in Rohit’s absence during the Perth Test, is a strong contender for the role. However, Bumrah may not be the only one eyeing the captaincy in the longest format.
Senior Player Pushes for Interim Captaincy
According to a report in Indian Express, a senior player has expressed interest in taking up the role of interim Test captain. The unnamed player even referred to himself as ‘Mr. Fix-It,’ offering to help resolve the current challenges the team is facing.
The same report mentions that this player has reservations about younger candidates in the leadership race, believing they still need time to mature before taking on the captaincy responsibilities.
While the identity of this senior player is not revealed, it’s worth noting that India has only a few experienced players in the squad, including Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, and Bumrah himself.
Jasprit Bumrah: The Leading Candidate
Jasprit Bumrah appears to be the favorite for the Test captaincy, especially after his impressive leadership in Perth, where India secured their only win of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Bumrah’s calm demeanor and ability to lead by example make him an obvious choice.
With Rohit Sharma expected to retire from Test cricket after the Australia series if India fails to qualify for the World Test Championship final, the stage could be set for Bumrah to take over.
Vice-Captaincy Options
While Bumrah leads the race for captaincy, the vice-captaincy is also a topic of discussion. KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant are two likely candidates for the role. Rahul’s prior experience as a stand-in captain and Pant’s rise as a dependable wicketkeeper-batter make them strong contenders.
