Mitchell Starc Pulls Out of ICC Champions Trophy, Steve Smith to Lead Australia

Mitchell Starc has pulled out of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

Australia’s fast bowler Mitchell Starc has decided not to play in the ICC Champions Trophy. He withdrew due to personal reasons. This is a big loss for the team, as two other top fast bowlers, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, are also missing the tournament due to injuries.

Australia’s Bowling Options

With Starc, Cummins, and Hazlewood unavailable, Australia will depend on other fast bowlers. The team will now rely on Sean Abbott, Spencer Johnson, Ben Dwarshuis, and Nathan Ellis. These bowlers do not have much experience in big tournaments, but they will get a chance to prove themselves.

Starc to Miss Warmup Matches Too

Selectors have also confirmed that Starc will not play in the two warm-up ODI matches against Sri Lanka. The first match is set to take place later on Wednesday in Colombo. Selector George Bailey said they respect Starc’s decision. He added that while losing Starc is a big blow, this is also a chance for another player to shine.

Steve Smith as Captain

With regular captain Pat Cummins injured, Steve Smith will lead the team. He recently captained Australia in a Test series against Sri Lanka, where they won 2-0. Now, he will have the responsibility of guiding the team in the Champions Trophy.

Australia will have to work hard in the tournament without their three top fast bowlers. Fans will be eager to see how the team performs under Steve Smith’s leadership.
