Congress Leader Shama Mohamed Refuses to Apologize to Rohit Sharma for Fat-Shaming
Shama Mohamed's comment calling Rohit Sharma a "fat sportsperson" sparked anger among fans and politicians.

Congress faced embarrassment after its spokesperson, Shama Mohamed, criticized Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma’s fitness. Her comment calling him a “fat sportsperson” sparked anger among fans and politicians. Seeing the strong reaction, the Congress party quickly stepped in and asked her to delete the post. She followed the orders and removed all related posts but did not apologize.
The Controversial Post
The controversy began during India’s match against New Zealand. Ms Mohamed posted on social media, criticizing Rohit Sharma’s weight and leadership. She wrote, “Rohit Sharma is fat for a sportsman! Need to lose weight! And of course the most unimpressive Captain India has ever had.”
This upset cricket fans, who defended Rohit Sharma by highlighting his achievements as captain. Even the BJP joined the debate, accusing Congress of having an “Emergency mindset.”
Congress Steps In
The next morning, Ms Mohamed tried to explain her post, saying it was a general opinion and that she had the right to express herself. However, this did not calm the situation. Congress, realizing the damage, distanced itself from her remarks and asked her to delete the post. She soon removed not only the controversial post but also her responses defending it.
Senior Congress leader Pawan Khera later clarified that Ms Mohamed’s views were personal and did not represent the party. He stated that Congress respects sports personalities and does not support such comments. He also advised party members to be more careful in the future.
BJP’s Reaction
The BJP strongly criticized Congress over the issue. Party spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari called the remarks “shameful” and mocked Congress, suggesting Rahul Gandhi should try playing cricket after his failures in politics. He also said the comment was an insult to all Indian cricket fans.
More Controversial Comments
Ms Mohamed even argued with a Pakistan-based journalist who praised Rohit Sharma as a “world-class performer.” She disagreed, saying, “What is so world-class about him? He is a mediocre captain and player who just got lucky.” She compared him unfavorably to past cricket legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, and MS Dhoni.
Despite the uproar, she has not apologized. The controversy has left Congress embarrassed, and the party is now trying to control the damage.
