KL Rahul Dethrones Virat Kohli And Become Fastest To Achieve THIS Milestone
IPL 2021: While Kohli had reached the mark in 167 innings, KL Rahul reached in his 143rd innings.
Punjab Kings (PBKS) skipper KL Rahul, on Thursday (April 21) broke Virat Kohli’s record to become the fastest Indian batsman to score 5,000 T20 runs. He achieved this milestone in the 14th match of the Indian Premier League 2021.
Rahul was just 1 run short of the milestone before the game and he got there off the very first ball of the match bowled by off-spinner Abhishek Sharma after Punjab won the toss and opted to bat first against SunRisers Hyderabad at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
Rahul, however, became the fastest Indian to reach the milestone and second fastest in the world after Chris Gayle, who had reached the feat in 132 innings. Reaching the 5000-runs milestone in his 143rd innings in T20 cricket, Rahul surpassed Shaun Marsh (144).
For the record, Rahul has also eclipsed Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) skipper Virat Kohli by becoming the fastest Indian to score 5,000 T20 runs. Indian skipper Kohli completed 5,000 T20 runs in his 167th inning on January 31, 2016, against Australia at Sydney.
With Rahul’s record, Shaun Marsh is now the overall third to aggregate 5,000 T20 runs. He took 144 innings for the milestone. Among the Indian batsmen, Suresh Raina (173) is the third fastest man after Rahul and Kohli to score 5,000 T20 runs.
Unfortunately, KL Rahul did not have a very good day with the bat in hand, as his contribution was of just 4 runs in his team’s 120 runs. Hyderabad chased down the target with 8 balls and 9 wickets to spare.
Khaleel Ahmed (3/21) and Abhishek Sharma (2/24) shone with the ball as the Sunrisers dished out a disciplined bowling effort to restrict Punjab, who never got the momentum during their innings.
