Who Is Arzan Nagwaswalla – The New Addition To India’s Test squad?
Arzan Nagwaswalla first shot to fame when playing for Gujarat he returned with a fifer against Mumbai in their own bastion at the Wankhede in a Ranji Trophy clash in 2018. His ability to swing the ball and propensity to pick wickets stand out.
The Board of Control for cricket in India (BCCI) on Friday announced a 20-Men Indian squad and four reserve player for the final of the World Test Championship against New Zealand, scheduled to be played in Southampton and the 5 test series against England from June-September this year.
While the likes of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Hardik Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav and Prithvi Shaw were some of the big names missing out from the squad, 23-year-old Arzan Nagwaswalla was one of the surprise picks in the standby group of players.
Opening batsman and wicketkeeper Abhimanyu Easwaran along with 3 pacers, Avesh Khan, Prasidh Krishna and Arzan Nagwaswalla have been picked in the standby group of players.
While Avesh and Prasidh are household names after their performances for Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League, Nagwaswalla is yet to feature in the T20 tournament, which is known for being the launchpads for youngsters in the country. But before that, we need to know more about this young boy.
Who is Arzan Nagwaswalla?
Arzan Nagwaswalla is a left-arm medium-fast bowler who is known for his ability to swing the red ball in first-class cricket. He was born on October 17, 1997 in Surat, Gujarat.
He belongs to the Parsi community, which has played an important part in the Indian cricket history. He doesn’t have any cricket background but picked the basics of the game from his brother Vispi at an early age and then only bettered his ability with the ball.
Notably, Nagwaswalla became the first Parsi cricketer to play Ranji Trophy since 1995, according to CricketCountry, when he made his debut for Gujarat in 2018. Later, Nagwaswalla made his Ranji Trophy debut against Baroda in Vadodara on November 1, 2018 and ended up picking only a wicket.
However, he caught the attention of the cricket fraternity with a five-wicket haul against Mumbai in Mumbai in only his 3rd first-class outing. He was the man responsible for Mumbai’s batting collapses picking up wickets of Suryakumar Yadav, Armaan Jaffer, Aditya Tare, Dhrumil Matkar and Siddhesh Lad.
In his debut Ranji Trophy season, Nagwaswalla picked up 21 wickets in 8 matches with best figures of 5/90. In the following season, Nagwaswalla grew leaps and bounds as he topped Gujarat’s wicket-takers charts with 41 scalps in just 8 matches at an impressive average of 18.36.
Nagwaswalla’s best first-class figures came in January 2020 when he picked up a 10-wicket match haul against Punjab in Gujarat’s 110-run win.
Nagwaswalla was in fine form in the recently-concluded white-ball domestic tournaments in India. The left-arm seamer picked up 19 wickets in just 7 matches at an impressive economy rate of 4.32, including the best bowling spell of 6/54 in Vijay Hazare Trophy. In the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he had picked up 9 wickets from 5 matches.
