Dinesh Karthik, captain of IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), has taken a big decision in the middle of IPL. He has handed over the Kolkata Knight Riders’ captaincy to England’s limited overs captain Eoin Morgan.

“#IPL2020 Dinesh Karthik informs the KKR management that with a view to focus on his batting and contributing more to the team’s cause, he wishes to hand over the team’s captaincy to Eoin Morgan: #KolkataKnightRiders (KKR),” KKR tweeted on Friday afternoon, while putting out a statement on their website.

Dinesh Karthik has taken this decision to focus on his batting and contribute for his team. England’s limited overs cricket captain Eoin Morgan has been named the new captain of the team after Karthik relinquished the captaincy. Karthik’s performance with the bat in the 13th edition of the IPL was quite disappointing.

Kolkata Knight Riders had named Dinesh Karthik as the captain before the start of the 2018 IPL season and at that time he replaced Gautam Gambhir, who helped his side in winning IPL title twice. Karthik has captained KKR for two IPL seasons in 2018 and 2019. During his tenure, the team was successful in making it to the playoffs in 2018 and at number five in 2019.

KKR CEO Venky Mysore said in a statement that they were fortunate to have a captain like Dinesh Karthik who always made the team paramount. A person like him needs a lot of courage to make such a decision.

KKR CEO Venky Mysore Said on The KKR Website:

“We are fortunate to have leaders such as DK, who has always put the team first. It takes a lot of courage for someone like him to take a decision such as this. While we were surprised by his decision, we are respectful of his wishes. We are also fortunate that Morgan, the 2019 World Cup-winning captain, who has been the vice-captain, is willing to lead the side going forward. DK and Eoin have worked brilliantly together during this tournament and although Eoin takes over as captain, this is effectively a role swap and we expect that this transition will work in a seamless manner.

“On behalf of everyone at KKR, we thank DK for all his contributions as the captain over the past two and a half years and wish Eoin the very best going forward.”

Out of the seven matches that KKR has played in IPL 2020 so far, they have won four and lost three. His team finished fourth in the points table.
