Shreyas Iyer to make his Test debut in Kanpur Test vs New Zealand.
India’s stand-in captain Ajinkya Rahane confirmed on the eve of the first Test against New Zealand that Shreyas Iyer is going to make his Test debut for team in Kanpur on Thursday.
The first Test of the 2-match Test series gets underway on Thursday (November 25) and Mumbai-born, who has been consistent run getter in ODI and T20I cricket, would be looking to roar on whites as well.
Speaking to the media on the eve of the opening game, Rahane said: “Shreyas Iyer is going to make his debut.”
Notably, the big players of the team, namely Rishabh Pant, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami have been rested for this series. As a massive blow ahead of the first Test, KL Rahul, who was expected to open the inning for team India has also ruled out of the entire series after sustaining a thigh injury.
It has to be noted that regular captain Virat Kohli has been rested for the first Test and will return for the next fixture.
Iyer, who made his India debut back in 2017, has had to wait 4 years to get his Test cap. The 26-year-old, who plays for Mumbai, has a blistering first-class record, 4592 runs in 54 matches at an average of 52.18. Iyer has hit 12 first-class hundreds with his best score being 202 not out.
