Former Indian cricketer Abey Kuruvilla in Fray to Become National Selector
Abey Kuruvilla, who has played 10 Test matches and 25 ODIs, applied for the job on 13 November, two days before the deadline.
Former Indian fast bowler Abey Kuruvilla could get a place in the panel of National selectors of the Indian team. Mumbai fast bowler Kuruvilla is in the fray to fill one of the three vacant positions in the national selection panel.
The vacancies have arisen after the tenures of Sarandeep Singh (North Zone), Devang Gandhi (East) and Jatin Paranjape (West) ended.
Abe Kuruvilla has played 10 Test matches and 25 ODIs for India. He has applied to get this job on November 13, two days before the deadline and he can be elected to the National Selectors’ Committee as he meets every criterion. He has taken a total of 25 wickets in international cricket. Kuruvilla was in the junior selection panel from 2008-12 and headed it when India won the U-19 World Cup in 2012.
It was only in 2012 that Abe Kuruvilla was named as the chief selector for Mumbai. Now he will face stiff competition from Navi Mumbai’s 53-year-old fast bowler Ajit Agarkar, who is being topped for the role. Ajit Agarkar has also served as the chief selector of Mumbai. The selectors are to be selected by the Madan Lal-led Cricket Advisory Committee, which also includes RP Singh and Sulakshana Naik.
Significantly, in March this year, the committee selected Sunil Joshi (South Zone) and Harvinder Singh (Central Zone) as members of the five-member panel. During that time, the Board of Control for Cricket in India, or BCCI, appointed Sunil Joshi as the chairman of the selectors’ committee. However, international cricket has not been played since then. This is the second time he has selected the team.
