LPL 2020: Shahid Afridi Makes An Exit From Tournament Citing ‘Personal Emergency’

Shahid Afridi has said he would try and return to Sri Lanka to lead Galle Gladiators after resolving the personal emergency back home.

Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi on Wednesday said that he is heading back to Pakistan from Lanka Premier League to attend a ‘personal emergency’. Shahid Afridi is leading Galle Gladiators in the ongoing Lanka Premier League.

However, Shahid Afridi also confirmed that he would return to join his team at LPL 2020 after the situation at home is resolved.

Shahid Afridi had also missed a flight to Sri Lanka last month and delayed his arrival for the Lanka Premier League. Notably, under Shahid Afridi’s leadership, Galle Gladiators haven’t managed to win a single game out of the three they played so far. Galle Gladiators is currently sitting at the bottom of the LPL points table.

Unlike other players who had undergone a 7-day mandatory quarantine period, Shahid Afridi was in isolation only for 3 days after arriving in Sri Lanka on November 24. He will likely be allowed to join the team after a similar quarantine if he returns to Sri Lanka as he proved he already contracted the novel coronavirus and is unlikely to get reinfected.

Shahid Afridi took to social media to announce his temporary withdrawal from Lanka Premier League.

“Unfortunately I have a personal emergency to attend to back home. I will return to join back my team at LPL immediately after the situation is handled. All the best,” Afridi tweeted.

Shahid Afridi had a great start to the tournament as he smashed a 23-ball 58 in Gladiators’ opening match on November 27. However, in the next two games, he failed to make the same impact. While in the second game, he managed just 12runs, in the 3rd one, he was out for a golden duck.

Afridi was also indulged in a heated on-field argument with young Afghani pacer Naveen-ul-Haq during Gladiators’ loss to Kandy Tuskers.
