Rohit Sharma injured his thumb during the second ODI.

Team India suffered another injury setback as their captain Rohit Sharma ruled out of the third and final ODI match against Bangladesh, set to be played on Saturday, December 10 at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram.

In the second ODI of the three-match series on Wednesday, December 7, Rohit injured his thumb and was taken to the hospital for a scan which revealed a dislocation and not a fracture. He returned to the dressing room and also came out to bat at No.9.

The 34-year-old made a valiant effort by smacking an unbeaten 51 off 28 balls but fell five runs short of winning the match for India. The Mumbai batter is now set to fly back to India to ascertain the gravity of his injury.

The India captain sustained the injury while attempting to take a catch of Bangladesh opener Anamul Haque Bijoy while standing at the second slip in the second over of Bangladesh’s innings. Earlier, Rahul Dravid, head coach of team India provided an update on Sharma’s injury:

“We are struggling with a few injuries as well. Not ideal. Kuldeep, Deepak and Rohit will certainly miss the next game. Rohit will miss the next game, fly back to Bombay, consulting with an expert. Whether he will return for the Test series or not, I am not sure. It’s too early to say,” Dravid said.

“He had to go to the hospital. There was a dislocation in his hand. He has to set it, take a couple of injections and then get back to the field. Credit to him, he was very determined to have a go out and take a chance. It was amazing how close he got us,” he added.

The 3rd and final ODI of the three-match series will be played on December 10 at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram. KL Rahul will lead the team in Rohit Sharma’s absence.
