Sophie Devine Records Fastest Century in Women's T20 Cricket, Hits 36-Ball Hundred in New Zealand

New Zealand captain and Veteran batsman Sophie Devine, on Thursday, hit the fastest hundred in women’s Twenty20 cricket. Devine took just 36 balls to complete her fastest hundred in the domestic Super Smash T20 league.

Devine’s brilliant knock consisted of nine fours and as many sixes, as she remained unbeaten on 108 to lead Wellington Blaze to a 10 wicket-victory over Otago Sparks.

Otago Sparks, batting first posted 128 runs on the board. Wellington Blaze, in reply chased down the total of 128 in just the 9th over of the match, thanks to Devine’s knock.

She broke the record of West Indies all-rounder Deandra Dottin who had hit a 38-ball hundred in 2010. It was also the fastest T20 hundred in New Zealand, beating Tim Seifert’s 40-ball knock for Northern Districts in 2017.

Devine also participated in Women’s Big Bash League and had just finished her 14-day quarantine period after returning from Australia. It was her first match after completing quarantine. Just before the match, while talking to spark sports, she went on to say that she was nervous before going in to bat.

“Whenever you have a bit of an extended break away from the game, you get nervous about (whether) you can come back into it,” she told Spark Sport.

“So it was just (nice) to spend some time in the middle and get a few out of the screws.

“Sometimes I can get a little bit carried away … and I get a bit over eager and play some rash shots so it was nice to stick to some decent cricket shots today and finish the job.”
