AUS vs SA: David Warner Breaks Test Century Drought, Equals Sachin Tendulkar’s Spectacular Record
David Warner smashed double ton against South Africa, while playing his 100th Test for Australia.
Australia’s star Test opener David Warner etched his name in history books as he scored a double ton against South Africa while playing the 100th Test of his career.
With this, Warner became only the second player after former England captain Joe Root in Test cricket history to hit a double ton in the 100th Test match for his country.
It wasn’t the only fear that he accomplished as Warner also equalled cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar’s record of most centuries as an opener in international cricket.
Both Warner and Sachin are tied for 45 centuries as openers in international cricket. While Warner has struck 20 ODI and 25 Test tons, Tendulkar hit 45 of his 100 centuries as an opener.
After registering a hundred in the ongoing Test at Melbourne Cricket Ground against South Africa, David Warner also became only the 10th player to score a century in his 100th Test outing.
The other players who feature on this elite tally are- Colin Cowdrey (England), Javed Miandad (Pakistan), Gordon Greenidge (West Indies), Alec Stewart (England), Inzamam-ul-Haq (Pakistan), Ricky Ponting (Australia), Graeme Smith (South Africa), Hashim Amla (South Africa), Joe Root (England).
The Aussie opener is also the only second Australian to score a hundred in his 100th Test after former captain Ricky Ponting, who smashed twin tons (120 and 143*) against South Africa way back in 2006 in his 100th Test.
David Warner Injured Himself While Celebrating His Double Century
The Australian opener however injured himself while celebrating his double century. He was already suffering from cramps as he batted throughout the innings, and the celebrations aggravated his pain.
Later, he was declared retired hurt and was carried out of the field by his teammates and support staff. He looked in severe pain while he was leaving the field and it is yet to be seen if he will be available to bat in the second innings.
