Shubman Gill Slams Maiden ODI Double Century, Youngest To Achieve The Milestone

Shubman Gill became the youngest batter to hit a double hundred in ODIs

India’s young opener Shubman Gill, on Wednesday (January 18) smacked his maiden double century off just 145 balls during the ODI series opener against New Zealand at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad.

With this, he became the fifth Indian cricketer ever to accomplish the massive feat. Earlier, the milestone was achieved by Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan.

Gill’s flamboyant double century was studded with 19 boundaries and nine towering sixes. He also became the youngest cricketer to hit a double century in ODIs – a record previously held by Ishan Kishan.

Earlier during his innings, Gill also became the fastest Indian batter to reach the 1,000-run mark surpassing Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan. Gill reached the milestone in 19 innings while Kohli and Dhawan both took 24 innings to achieve the feat.

Also, this is the highest individual score against New Zealand in ODIs. He shattered the long-standing record of Sachin Tendulkar, who mustered unbeaten 186 runs against the Black Caps at the same ground back in 1999.

Thanks to Shubman Gill’s masterclass, India posted a mammoth total of 349 runs on the scoreboard for the loss of eight wickets after opting to bat first. Apart from Gill, no other batters could manage to breach a 50-run mark for India.
