Australia stamped their authority on the second day of the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) final against India, showcasing exceptional bowling discipline and accuracy unlike the Indian bowlers, who all were inconsistent, conceding too many runs and allowing Australia to amass a mammoth first innings total of 469 runs.
India began positively with Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill providing a solid start, but their fortunes quickly turned as they lost five wickets in the latter half of Day 2. By the end of the day, India found themselves at 151/5, trailing Australia by 318 runs and still needing 118 runs to avoid a follow-on.
Australia’s entire bowling unit chipped in with a wicket each, showcasing their collective strength. Meanwhile, India discovered a ray of hope in the crucial 71-run partnership between Ajinkya Rahane and Ravindra Jadeja, providing stability amid ruins.
Lyon claimed the wicket of Jadeja, who scored a brisk 48 off 51 deliveries, while Rahane held his ground till the end of the day, finishing unbeaten on 29 off 71 balls, with wicket-keeper batter KS Bharat at the other end.
Earlier, Australia put on a total of 469 runs, courtesy of centuries from Travis Head and Steve Smith. Alex Carey’s quickfire 48-run knock also helped Australia go beyond the 450-run mark.
