IND vs AUS – WTC Final 2023: Shubman Gill Falls Victim to Controversial Call, Crowd Erupts in Chants of ‘Cheater Cheater’

ICC World Test Championship: Shubman Gill's dismissal off Scott Boland's delivery became a heated controversy.

The fourth day of the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) final match between Australia and India witnessed a heated controversy when Shubman Gill’s dismissal off Scott Boland’s delivery became the center of attention.

The incident happened in the 7.1 over of India’s run-chase of 444 runs, when Scott Boland bowled an outside-off delivery that induced an edge from Shubman Gill, who saw the ball carried towards the slip cordon. Cameron Green stretched out his arms in an attempt to complete the catch.

The on-field umpire initially signalled Shubman Gill out and referred the decision to the third umpire, who, upon reviewing several clips, declared Gill out. However, it was evident from the footage that Cameron Green had used the ground to complete the catch, and the ball had clearly made contact with the ground.

In yet another significant incident, the crowd erupted in chants of “cheater, cheater” after the third umpire confirmed Shubman Gill’s dismissal. The Punjab batter had been displaying excellent form, scoring 18 runs off 19 deliveries.

Currently, India is at 47/1 in 7.1 overs during the tea break and they need 397 runs to win this match and lift the ICC trophy. The task ahead seems insurmountable for India, and it will be intriguing to see whether they can successfully chase down the target and etch their names in the annals of history.
