ICC Suspends Sri Lanka Cricket’s Membership Due to Political Interference
ICC suspended Sri Lanka Cricket with immediate effect, extensive government interference in SLC administration is the suspected reason behind the decision.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has suspended Sri Lanka Cricket’s membership of the board with immediate effect.
This comes after the Sri Lankan government interfered in the Sri Lanka Cricket Board matters and suspended the entire cricket board following their underwhelming performance in the 2023 World Cup.
“The ICC Board met today and determined that Sri Lanka Cricket is in serious breach of its obligations as a Member, in particular, the requirement to manage its affairs autonomously and ensure that there is no government interference in the governance, regulation and/or administration of cricket in Sri Lanka,” ICC stated.
Meanwhile, the terms of the suspension will be determined by the ICC Board in due time. Sri Lanka finished at the bottom of the points table in the 2023 World Cup, having only won two out of the nine matches.
