Gautam Gambhir Predicts Babar Azam to Become Pakistan’s Greatest Batsman After Stepping Down from Captaincy

Babar Azam has stepped down from Pakistan’s captaincy across formats after underwhelming performance in World Cup 2023.

Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir believes that Babar Azam has the ability to become the best batter Pakistan has ever produced.

In a recent conversation with ex-Pakistan fast bowler Wasim Akram on Sportskeeda, Gambhir pointed out that Babar Azam, having stepped down from captaincy in all formats, is now free to channel his concentration exclusively into batting.

“You’ll see a new and improved Babar Azam now. Before the World Cup, I predicted he’d be the top batter of the tournament. But captaincy pressure can weigh heavily when your team is not performing well. Now, free from captaincy, you’ll see his real potential. With 10 years ahead and no captaincy burden, he might become Pakistan’s best batter ever.”

In the aftermath of Pakistan‘s underwhelming performance in the 2023 ODI World Cup held in India, where they ended up fifth in the points table and failed to reach the top four, Babar Azam stepped down from Pakistan’s captaincy in all formats.

While Shaheen Afridi has been appointed as Pakistan’s T20 captain, Shan Masood has been designated as the Test captain. Babar Azam will be playing under Shan Masood in the upcoming Test series against Australia Down Under.
