Shubman Gill, the embattled Indian prodigy, silenced his critics with a splendid Test century on Day 3 of the second match against England in Visakhapatnam.
Gill, who went on to score 104 runs from 147 balls, lucked out early with a close LBW call overturned by the TV umpire, who detected an inside edge.
Another nervy moment ensued in the next over as an incoming delivery from Anderson struck Gill’s knee roll, but the umpire ruled in the batter’s favour.
Speaking in the post-match conference at the end of the gameplay on Day 3, Here’s what Shubman Gill said on surviving the close LBW:
“The first one I didn’t feel it (inside edge onto pad). Shreyas told me to take it in case it’s umpire’s call. I saw the point fielder go there and I thought it was a percentage shot. Should’ve just played the 5-6 overs till tea.”
Asked about the potential scolding from his father for the shot against Shoaib Bashir and the resulting dismissal, Gill had this to say:
“I think so. I’ll get to know once I get back to the hotel but I think so. He comes for most of my games, there’s no such pressure.”
Riding on Shubman Gill’s century knock, India gave England a 399-run target to chase in the fourth and last innings. The visitors ended Day 3 with the scorecard reading 67/1.
