Shaheen Afridi to Be Sacked as PCB Plans to Reappoint Babar Azam as All-Format Captain

Babar Azam is all set to be re-appointed as all-format captain of Pakistan.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is contemplating re-appointing Babar Azam as the captain across all formats following the underwhelming performance of Shaheen Afridi and Shan Masood as T20I and Test captains.

Babar Azam notably relinquished his role as Pakistan’s captain across all three formats in the aftermath of Pakistan’s subpar performance in the 2023 World Cup held in India the previous year.

Following Babar Azam’s resignation, the Pakistan Cricket Board named Shan Masood as the Test captain and Shaheen Shah Afridi as the T20I captain of Pakistan.

According to PTI, Babar Azam remains the only viable option for the Pakistan Cricket Board at this time.

“The funny part is that the powers that be appear to have lost faith in Shan Masood and Shaheen Shah Afridi’s ability to lead the national side in Test and T20 formats with the change in the board’s chairmanship,” a source said.

Furthermore, the report revealed that the Pakistan Cricket Board has already communicated with Babar Azam, who has displayed interest but requires assurances from the chairman.

“Feelers have been sent out to Babar to find out if he is ready to take charge again and he has shown some reservations. Apparently, he wants some assurances from the board chairman,” the source added.
