Babar Azam’s Captaincy in Jeopardy? PCB Chief Hints at Change After T20 World Cup Loss to India
Pakistan suffered two back-to-back defeats in the T20 World Cup 2024.
Pakistan’s consecutive defeats at the start of their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign are likely to trigger significant repercussions back home, with PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi already suggesting major changes after the tournament.
Babar Azam and his team fell short by six runs in their chase of 120 against arch-rivals India at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York. From here their Super 8 qualification chances look slim.
In response to the disappointing loss to India, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has made it clear that certain players in the current squad will be dropped.
“I thought the team required minor surgery to start winning matches but now it appears that we have to go for major surgery. It is very disappointing the way we lost to the USA and now this loss to India. We need to now start looking at players beyond those in the team right now,” Naqvi said while speaking to the media in New York.
Pakistan will now rely on India and Ireland to prevent the USA from surpassing four points, while also needing India to win their remaining matches convincingly against Canada and Ireland.
It will be interesting to see if the PCB sticks with Babar Azam as captain, whom they re-appointed in the role after sacking Shaheen Afridi following just one series defeat.
