Pakistan Loses Over ₹7,400 Crore After Hosting Champions Trophy
Pakistan spent PKR 18 billion (Rs 4,823 crore) on stadium upgrades.
The ICC Champions Trophy is one of cricket’s most exciting tournaments, where the world’s top teams compete for glory. It was first introduced in 1998 as the ICC KnockOut, a one-off event designed to bring together the top cricket teams. In 2002, the tournament was renamed the ICC Champions Trophy, and from then on, it became a regular event in the cricket calendar, held every 4 years.
The tournament’s main goal was to provide an opportunity for the best teams in the world to play limited-overs cricket. While the format has evolved over the years, the tournament typically included a group stage, followed by semi-finals and a final. The competition has seen various formats, ranging from knockout rounds to the round-robin style.
Over the years, the Champions Trophy has been held in several countries, including India, England, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan. Some of the tournament’s most memorable editions include 2002, when India shared the trophy with Sri Lanka, and 2017, when Pakistan won their first title by defeating India in the final. India and Australia have been the most successful teams, winning the Champions Trophy title twice.
However, after the 2017 edition, the tournament was not held again. The International Cricket Council (ICC) decided to shift focus towards other major events like the ICC World Cup and ICC T20 World Cup, which took priority. This led to a break in the tournament, and there were no Champions Trophy editions held after 2017.
In 2025, the ICC Champions Trophy will return. The 2025 edition will be unique as it will be held in a hybrid model, where India will play all of their matches in Dubai, while other matches will take place in Pakistan. This arrangement was made due to the political situation between the two countries, where India and Pakistan usually don’t play each other’s home series.
Despite the break, the Champions Trophy remains a much-awaited event. Pakistan won the 2017 Champions Trophy, which was a huge achievement for the team, as it was their first win in this tournament. India, Pakistan, Australia, England, and other top teams will compete once again for the prestigious title in 2025.
