Ajinkya Rahane Set to Play for Leicestershire in County Championship After IPL 2023 with CSK

Ajinkya Rahane will play 8 county matches and the entire Royal London Cup.

India’s senior batter Ajinkya Rahane is set to join Leicestershire for the English summer, where he will play eight County Championship matches and will be available for the entire Royal London One-Day Cup 2023.

Rahane signed a deal with Leicestershire on Tuesday, January 31. This will be his second stint in the County Championship. He earlier played for Hampshire back in 2019.

Leicestershire’s confirmed the development via social media.

“Leicestershire CCC is thrilled to confirm the signing of India star @ajinkyarahane88 for the 2023 season. The former @BCCI captain will join in June for 8 County Championship matches and the entirety of the One Day Cup.”

Since being dropped from the Sri Lanka series, Rahane has not been considered for India’s Test team. His last Test appearance came in January 2022 against South Africa.

Both Pujara and Rahane were dropped at the same time from the team. However, Pujara regained his place in the XI with exceptional showings in County Championship Division 2. Meanwhile, Rahane shines in Ranji Trophy with 634 runs, including 2 tons in 7 games.

Ajinkya Rahane’s Statement:

“I’m really happy to be joining Leicestershire for the upcoming season. I can’t wait to play alongside my new teammates and explore the vibrant city of Leicester.”

Speaking about Rahane’s signing, Director of Cricket, Claude Henderson, said:

“I’m extremely excited to welcome Ajinkya to Leicestershire. He comes with a lot of experience and a tremendous work ethic. It’s a great opportunity for us to tap into that.”

“I had conversations with (Assistant Coach) Alfonso Thomas and (Head Coach) Paul Nixon, who had eyed Ajinkya in the past, so he was always on our radar. It was a case of seeing what the team needed, which was definitely a senior overseas batsman, so we are delighted to have secured someone of Ajinkya’s calibre.”
