Angry Dinesh Karthik Rips Apart Babar Azam for Blaming Bowlers After USA Defeat
Pakistan suffered an embarrassing loss to USA in their T20 World Cup 2024 opener.
Pakistan’s T20 World Cup campaign began in disastrous fashion as they were stunned by the USA in a dramatic Super Over finish.
Following the defeat, captain Babar Azam shouldered the blame on his bowlers, criticizing their performance during the post-match presentation.
However, former Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik has taken a strong stance against Babar Azam’s
approach to leadership.
Karthik, speaking to Cricbuzz, emphasized the importance of a captain projecting confidence and backing his players publicly.
“A captain needs to be diplomatic, especially when addressing the media and public,” said Karthik. “Public criticism undermines players’ confidence. Even if you need to address shortcomings, it should be done privately, not broadcasted.”
“At a time like this, when the team is vulnerable, the captain should acknowledge the loss but also show a willingness to move forward. Publicly saying the team played poorly is demoralizing,” he stated.
“A captain’s words hold immense power, and they need to be used for constructive criticism, not negativity.”
Dinesh Karthik further criticized Babar Azam’s on-field behaviour, particularly his animated reactions when boundaries were scored. He was also spotted shouting at Haris Rauf in the final over of the game when Rauf failed to defend the target.
“Confronting bowlers aggressively doesn’t inspire confidence. While showing disappointment is natural, it can unsettle already nervous players,” he explained.
Pakistan‘s bowling attack, known for its pace, could only manage three wickets – Mohammad Amir, Naseem Shah and Harif Rauf, getting one each against the USA.
The final over saw a dramatic turn of events as Haris Rauf conceded crucial boundaries, allowing the USA to tie the match and snatch victory in the Super Over.
This triggered a visible outburst from the captain. Pakistan now faces a must-win encounter against arch-rivals India on Sunday.
With their backs against the wall, they will need strong leadership and a collective effort to bounce back from this shocking defeat.
