Captaincy Clash Between Gautam Gambhir and BCCI Delays India Squad Announcement for Sri Lanka Tour

Gautam Gambhir wants Suryakumar Yadav as India’s next T20I captain while BCCI is looking at Hardik Pandya as Rohit Sharma’s successor.

The Indian cricket team’s squad announcement for the upcoming Sri Lanka tour has been delayed as they are yet to decide the next T20I captain. India is set to play three T20Is and three ODIs in Sri Lanka, with the T20Is kicking off on July 27th. This marks Gautam Gambhir’s first major assignment as the head coach.

Following Rohit Sharma’s T20I retirement, the BCCI is hunting for a new captain. While there were reports of Hardik Pandya taking over the reins, it has now been reported that Gambhir is more interested in Suryakumar Yadav as the T20I captain.

Captaincy Dilemma Leads to Late Announcement

According to Dainik Jagran, the selection meeting has been postponed due to a captaincy conundrum. The BCCI reportedly desires a long-term captain with the 2026 T20 World Cup (co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka) in mind. Gambhir, it seems, prefers Suryakumar Yadav, while the BCCI allegedly favours Hardik Pandya as Rohit Sharma’s successor. This difference in vision has sparked speculation of an ego clash between Gautam Gambhir and BCCI.
