Former Indian cricketer and batting legend Virender Sehwag recently opened up on the contribution of Indian opener KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma in the Test series against England.

Notably, both the openers are the highest run scorer for team India. While Rohit has accumulated 368 runs, KL Rahul has amassed 315 runs in 4 matches.

Also, this is the only Indian duo which has managed to smack centuries in England conditions. While KL has engraved his name on Lord’s honours board by hitting a magnificent century (129 to be precise), Rohit has done wonders in the Oval as he hit his first overseas century.

The opening duo has put on a one century partnership at Lord’s and two fifty-plus stands at Nottingham and Oval, respectively. Meanwhile, Sehwag feels that, had it not been KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma’s contribution at the top, team India would have struggled in the matches as their middle order looked out of touch throughout the series.

“The contribution of KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma cannot be forgotten. If the partnership had not happened between KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma, the middle order which was not scoring runs would have come in much earlier and India would have gotten all out even quicker,” Sehwag said on the Sony Sports Network.

“They used to get India to a strong position, bat for 30-40 overs although even after that because the middle order was not in form, we were getting all out early in some matches,” added Sehwag.

The fifth and final Test of the 5-Match series at Old Trafford was cancelled on Friday after the visitors failed to field a side following a Covid-19 case in their camp.

“Both the Boards will work towards finding a window to reschedule this test match,” the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said in a statement.

All the players will now travel to UAE for the remaining phase of the IPL. Some franchises have even sent chartered flights to pick up their players from England. The Indian Premier League is scheduled to start from September 19 in UAE.
