CSK vs MI: Who is Vignesh Puthur? The Mystery Spinner Who Made His IPL 2025 Debut Against CSK

Vignesh Puthur, a young left-arm wrist spinner from Kerala, made his IPL debut for Mumbai Indians against CSK in the 2025 season.

The third match of IPL 2025 between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians (MI) saw a new face in the MI lineup—Vignesh Puthur. As Mumbai struggled to defend their total of 155, they introduced him as an impact player, leaving many fans curious about the youngster.

Who is Vignesh Puthur?

Vignesh Puthur is a 23-year-old left-arm wrist spinner from Malappuram, Kerala. Despite having no senior-level experience for his state, he made headlines when Mumbai Indians picked him for ₹30 lakhs in the IPL 2025 auction.

Before IPL, he played in the Kerala Cricket League (KCL) for Alleppey Ripples, where he picked up just two wickets in three matches.

How Did He Get Picked by Mumbai Indians?

Vignesh got a chance to bowl at Mumbai Indians’ trials, where he bowled to players like Hardik Pandya. Though he initially felt nervous, MI’s coaching staff, especially Mahela Jayawardene, noticed his potential.

“Mahela sir knew I was nervous, so he came up to me and told me to take it easy. That made me feel more confident,” Vignesh shared.

After attending multiple trials, he was hoping to be selected as a net bowler but was surprised when MI actually bought him at the auction.

His Cricketing Journey

Vignesh started as a medium pacer before switching to leg-spin under the guidance of local cricketer Mohammed Sherif. He later moved to Thrissur to pursue his cricket career and impressed in the Kerala College Premier T20 league while playing for St. Thomas College. His strong performances for Jolly Rovers Cricket Club eventually earned him a spot in the KCL, which changed his career path.

With his unique bowling style, Vignesh Puthur is now set to learn and grow under the Mumbai Indians setup. His debut in IPL 2025 marks the beginning of an exciting journey.
