Deep Dasgupta Names India’s Opening Combination For T20 World Cup

India's former cricketer Deep Dasgupta during a question-answer session on his YouTube shared his opinion on the idea of Virat Kohli opening for India in T20 WC.

Virat Kohli promoted himself in the batting order in the last match against England at home and even made clear that he wants to open in the T20 format. The Indian skipper continued to open for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 before the tournament was suspended due to covid breach.

However, former wicketkeeper-batsman Deep Dasgupta feels that it is too early to suggest whether Virat Kohli will open with Rohit Sharma in the upcoming T20 World Cup. Instead, the cricketer-turned commentator believes a lot will depend upon KL Rahul’s form.

In his latest YouTube video, the commentator said:

“Well, it’s possible, and Virat also mentioned during the last series, that he’s seriously thinking about opening with Rohit, he might, or whatever he said. But I don’t know whether it’s the right way to go about it. A lot will depend on how KL Rahul’s form is.”

“If KL Rahul is batting the way he was a year ago then I don’t see any reason why Virat should open. Then Rohit and KL can open, and Virat can come at three… I won’t say Virat and Rohit ‘will’ open at this point in time, I will say that option is still open,” he added.

KL Rahul Can Open With Rohit Sharma In The T20 World Cup: Deep Dasgupta

KL Rahul was seen in impressive form last year in T20Is and also in the IPL while playing Punjab Kings. The Karnataka batsman underwent appendicitis surgery days before the IPL 2021 was called off.

However, he is currently with the Indian contingent in England for the five-match Test series against the Three Lions, starting from August 4 in Nottingham.

“If KL Rahul is batting the way he was a year ago then I don’t see any reason why Virat should open. Then Rohit and KL can open, and Virat can come at three… I won’t say Virat and Rohit ‘will’ open at this point in time, I will say that option is still is open,” he added.

KL Rahul’s performance in the IPL 2021 first leg was stellar as the PBKS skipper played 7 matches and scored 331 runs at an average of 66.20. However, uncertainty looms over KL Rahul’s form as, during the T20 series against England, the Karnataka batsman did not perform well and scored only 1 run in 3 T20 matches.
