End of an Era as R Ashwin Retires from International Cricket
R Ashwin has retired from international cricket as the second highest wicket taker for India.
Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin announced his retirement from international cricket after the third Test match against Australia in Brisbane. The game ended in a draw on Wednesday, and Ashwin shared the news in a press conference with Indian captain Rohit Sharma.
Ashwin retires as India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Tests, with 537 wickets from 106 matches. He is only behind Anil Kumble, who holds the record with 619 Test wickets. Ashwin played one match in the ongoing five-Test series in Adelaide, where he picked up a wicket, but was replaced by Ravindra Jadeja for the Brisbane Test.
Ashwin to Continue Playing Franchise Cricket
Ashwin clarified that he will continue playing T20 cricket and represent Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2025. During his announcement, the 38-year-old said, “Today will be my last day as an India cricketer.” He spoke briefly and did not take any questions before leaving the stage.
Rohit Sharma supported Ashwin’s decision, stating, “He was very sure of his choice, and we should respect that.” Earlier, Ashwin was seen sharing an emotional moment with Virat Kohli in the dressing room.
A Glorious Career of R Ashwin
Ashwin’s international career lasted 14 years, starting in 2010. He took 765 wickets across all formats, making him the second-highest wicket-taker for India behind Anil Kumble, who has 956 international wickets.
Ashwin also played a crucial role in India’s ODI World Cup win in 2011 and the Champions Trophy victory in 2013. Known for his skill and innovation, he recorded 37 five-wicket hauls in Tests, second only to Muttiah Muralidaran’s 67.
With this retirement, Ashwin leaves behind a legacy that will inspire generations to come.
