Gautam Gambhir To Become India’s Next Head Coach? Major BCCI Update
BCCI approached Gautam Gambhir for the Head Coach position.
The Board for Cricket Control in India (BCCI) has reportedly reached out to former Indian batter Gautam Gambhir to succeed Rahul Dravid as the head coach of the national team, as per ESPNCricinfo. Gambhir, who is now the mentor for Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2024, is among the candidates.
The report suggests that the cricket governing body has reached out to Gambhir to check if he is interested in the coaching job, with further negotiations likely to occur after KKR’s IPL 2024 season ends.
Reports also state that Rahul Dravid has notified the BCCI of his decision not to reapply, with a deadline for applications set for May 27.
Although Gambhir has never coached a domestic team, he served as the mentor for the IPL’s Lucknow Super Giants in 2022 and 2023 before moving to Kolkata Knight Riders for the 2024 season.
Under his mentorship, LSG reached the playoffs twice, and he led KKR to the playoffs again this season.
The BCCI’s job advertisement states that the tenure will begin in July 2024 and continue until December 2027. The incoming head coach is expected to assume duties immediately after the T20 World Cup 2024, marking the end of Rahul Dravid’s tenure.
