ICC World Cup 2023: [Watch] Mohammad Nawaz Run-Out in Bizarre Mix-up with Shaheen Afridi During PAK vs NED

Mohammad Nawaz built a 64-run partnership Shadab Khan

Pakistan batter Mohammad Nawaz was involved in a bizarre run-out incident during the second match of the ICC World Cup 2023, which took place between Pakistan and Netherlands on Friday, October 7, at Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad.

It all happened during the second ball of the 47th over, bowled by Colin Ackermann. He delivered a full-length ball around the leg stump to Shaheen Afridi. Nawaz initially attempted a single but was sent back by the pacer.

A throw from the backward square leg reached the bowler, who fumbled while trying to collect it. That slight misfield opened the door for a run-out as the duo decided to sneak in a single during the chaos but this time, the fielder was lightning-fast, launching the ball straight to the stumps at the striker’s end, and the wicketkeeper dislodged the stumps while Nawaz made a desperate dive but was late to reach the crease.

Pakistan’s batting innings had a nightmarish beginning as they were asked to take the crease, slumping to 38/3 after just 9.1 overs. However, a glimmer of hope emerged when Mohammad Rizwan and Saud Shakeel formed a tremendous 120-run partnership for the fourth wicket.

Their departure, though, triggered a downward spiral. Mohammad Nawaz made a valiant effort to stem the collapse, even teaming up with Shadab Khan for a 64-run partnership. Yet, an unfortunate run-out brought Pakistan’s innings to an end, with them posting a total of 286 runs in 49 overs.
