India’s star off-spinner R Ashwin became the second Indian bowler after Anil Kumble to pick up 450 Test wickets. He reached the milestone following Alex Carey’s dismissal on the opening day of the first Test against Australia at Nagpur on Thursday, February 9.

The Indian off-spinner is now the second-fastest bowler in the world to reach the 450th Test wicket, only behind Sri Lankan Muttiah Muralitharan, who completed the feat in his 80th Test match.

The 36-year-old has become just the ninth bowler in Test cricket history to reach 450 Test wickets. He is behind Australia’s Nathan Lyon, who has 460 Test wickets in 115 games in the tally of most wicket-takers in Test cricket history.

Most Wickets for India in Tests:

  1. Anil Kumble – 619 (132 games)
  2. R Ashwin – 450* (89 games)
  3. Kapil Dev – 434 (131 games)

Earlier, the Indian pacers found some swing in the middle with the new ball at the start of the match. Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami took advantage of it and removed both openers – Usman Khawaja and David Warner.

He will become just the third bowler to achieve this milestone after Muttiah Muralidaran, who has 105 wickets in 22 Tests against India and James Anderson, who has 139 scalps in 35 Tests against India.
