Shubman Gill Becomes First Cricketer in Four Years to Score Test Century at Number Three in India

Shubman Gill found his stride once again, silencing critics as he notched up a gritty century against England in the opening Test at Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium, Visakhapatnam.

Gill, who couldn’t do much in the first innings, had the last laugh with a 132-ball century in the second innings, proving the naysayers wrong. He went on to score 104 from 147 balls before England’s debutant, Shoaib Basheer, ended his run.

Shubman Gill shifted to number three after 10 innings as an opener in Tests, aiming to replicate his ODI success in 2023. It took some time, but he finally came through with that crucial innings at his new position.

Notably, Shubman Gill is the first Indian to score a Test century at number three on home soil since 2017. The Punjab batter began batting at number three since the West Indies tour. He played five Tests in the new role before this game in Visakhapatnam.
