IND vs NZ: Trent Boult & Martin Guptill Dropped As New Zealand Announce Squads For India Series

New Zealand to play 3-match T20I and 3-match ODI series against India.

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) on Tuesday (November 15) announced the squad for the forthcoming white-ball series against India, comprising three T20Is and as many ODIs.

The premier pacer Trent Boult and experienced batter Martin Guptill are the notable absentees as they have not been included in New Zealand’s squad for the series starting from November 18.

Finn Allen will replace Guptill in the squad. Meanwhile, Boult will not be part of the squad since he asked to be released from the central contract with New Zealand Cricket so he could spend some time with his family.

The Door is Certainly Not Closed For Boult and Guptill – Gary Stead

New Zealand coach Gary Stead opined on the selection, stating leaving Boult and Guptill out of the squad was a difficult decision for the team management but they had to take a call, considering future tournaments in mind.

“When Trent opted out of his NZC contract in August, we indicated that priority would be given to those players with either central or domestic contracts, and that’s been the case here. We’re all aware of Trent’s world-class ability, but at this time – as we build towards more global events, we want to give opportunities and experiences to others,” said Stead.

Stead further conceded that Allen replaced Guptill in the squad to get some experience before the 50-Overs World Cup:

“The emergence and success of Finn at the top of the order in white-ball cricket means a guy of the class of Martin Guptill misses out – that’s just the nature of the high-performance sport.”

“With the 50-over World Cup less than a year away we’re keen to give Finn every opportunity to keep gaining ODI experience, especially against quality opposition such as India. The message to both those players is that there’s a lot of international cricket ahead and the door is certainly not closed to them,” Stead concluded.

The tour begins with a three-game T20 International series across Wellington (Nov 18), Tauranga (Nov 20), and Napier (Nov 22), before moving into the ODI series across Auckland (Nov 25), Hamilton (Nov 27) and Christchurch (Nov 30)
