IPL 2023: Shikhar Dhawan Replaces Mayank Agarwal as Punjab Kings Captain

Shikhar Dhawan has replaced Mayank Agarwal as Punjab Kings' captain.

In the latest turn of events, the Indian Premier League franchise, Punjab Kings announced the Indian opener, Shikhar Dhawan, as their new captain.

Dhawan will replace Mayank Agarwal, who took the captaincy charges after KL Rahul left the franchise as the skipper of Punjab Kings in the 2023 edition of the cash-rich league.

The decision was taken on Wednesday during a franchise board meeting and was backed by Trevor Bayliss, the newly appointed head coach of Punjab Kings.

Punjab Kings once again failed to qualify for the playoffs in the 2022 edition of the IPL and finished the season at sixth place in the points table.

Mayank Agarwal had an average season with the bat as he managed to score just 196 runs in 13 matches at an average of 16.33 while striking at 122.50.

Punjab spent INR 8.25 Crore to get the services of the senior Indian opener Dhawan at the mega auction, held earlier this year in February.

Dhawan, who opened the innings for Punjab Kings throughout the tournament, repaid the faith by scoring 460 runs in 14 matches at an average of 38.33 and a strike rate of 122.67.

With the Southpaw taking up the captaincy charge, it will be intriguing to see whether Punjab Kings retain Mayank Agarwal for INR 14 Crore.
