IPL 2024: Sangakkara Furious as Umpire Ignores Clear Evidence in Travis Head’s Run-Out Dismissal
After review by the third umpire, it was ruled that Head's bat touched the ground a fraction of a second before the bails were removed from the stumps.
A controversial umpiring call took place during the 50th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 between Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Thursday, May 2.
The umpiring in this ongoing IPL season has raised eyebrows, with many questionable calls by officials. A similar incident involving SRH batter Travis Head further fueled the debate.
It all happened in the 15th over when Travis Head stepped out of the crease after missing the ball off Avesh Khan and Sanju Samson threw the ball to dislodge the stumps.
Travis Head, losing his balance, placed his bat into the crease rather than sliding it. The on-field umpire referred the possible run-out to the third umpire.
The replay showed that Travis Head’s bat was not grounded but, much to the shock of the RR players, the third umpire adjudged him not out.
Meanwhile, Rajasthan Royals‘ head coach Kumar Sangakkara was visibly upset with the third umpire’s decision and engaged in a heated exchange with the match referee off the field.
Although Travis Head survived the controversial umpiring decision, his relief was short-lived. Avesh Khan delivered a good-length ball, and as Head moved across the stumps to play the lap shot, the ball struck the stumps.
