IPL 2025: 3 Players Who Could Replace Ruturaj Gaikwad in CSK
CSK suffer a big blow as Ruturaj Gaikwad is ruled out of IPL 2025, with MS Dhoni returning as captain and replacement options under consideration.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have suffered a major setback in the 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League. Their captain and top-order batter Ruturaj Gaikwad has been ruled out of the rest of the season due to an elbow injury.
With Gaikwad out, the CSK management has turned back to their most trusted leader — MS Dhoni. The veteran has been officially confirmed as the captain for the remaining games of IPL 2025.
While losing a consistent performer like Gaikwad is a tough blow, CSK have a small advantage that they still have one overseas slot left to use. This opens up the possibility of signing a foreign player as a replacement. The franchise also recently held trials with Indian youngsters, adding more options to their shortlist.
Here are three players CSK could consider as a replacement for Ruturaj Gaikwad:
1. Dewald Brevis
If CSK wants to go for an overseas signing, Dewald Brevis could be the best pick. The 21-year-old has been in red-hot form and impressed everyone during SA20 2025. Representing MI Cape Town, Brevis smashed 291 runs in the tournament with an average of 48.50 and a strike rate of 184.17. His aggressive style in the middle-order could give CSK the boost they need after losing Gaikwad.
2. Prithvi Shaw
A familiar name in Indian cricket, Prithvi Shaw is another strong option. Though he went unsold in the IPL 2025 mega option, he brings solid experience and aggression at the top. The 25-year-old has played 79 IPL matches and scored 1892 runs. From 2018 to 2024, he was with Delhi Capitals. Known for his fearless approach and attacking mindset, Shaw can slot straight into the opening position left vacant by Gaikwad.
3. Ayush Mhatre
The youngest in the list is Ayush Mhatre — a 17-year-old top-order batter from Mumbai. What adds to the buzz is that CSK recently called him for a mid-season trial, which shows he is very much on their radar. Mhatre has already played nine First-Class and seven List A games, and though he’s still raw, CSK has a history of nurturing young talent. If they’re looking for a long-term investment with potential, Mhatre could be their pick.
