Mohammed Shami Overtakes Zaheer Khan and Javagal Srinath as India’s Leading Wicket Taker in World Cup

Mohammed Shami picked up a five-wicket haul against Sri Lanka.

In a historic moment for India at the World Cup in Mumbai on Thursday (Nov 2), Mohammed Shami joined the ranks of Javagal Srinath and Zaheer Khan as one of the top wicket-takers for the two-time World Champions.

After Jasprit Bumrah’s early dismissal of Sri Lanka’s opener Pathum Nissanka for a golden duck, it was the Mohammed Shami show that dominated the match, with the Uttar Pradesh pacer claiming a five-wicket haul and leaving Sri Lanka in complete disarray.

With this, Shami equalled Mitchell Starc on top of the list of bowlers with most 5-wicket hauls in World Cups. He also took his World Cup tally to 45 wickets in just his 14th match in the 50-over World Cup.

While Zaheer Khan took 23 matches to get to 44 wickets in World Cups, Javagal Srinath finished with 44 in 34 matches.

Most World Cup Wickets for India:

  1. Mohammed Shami – 45 in 14 matches*
  2. Zaheer Khan – 44 in 23 matches
  3. Javagal Srinath – 44 in 34 matches
  4. Jasprit Bumrah – 33 in 16 matches
