NZ vs BAN: Bangladesh Record A Historic Win Over New Zealand
Bangladesh defeated New Zealand by 8 wickets in the 1st Test in Mount Maunganui.
Bangladesh, on Wednesday (January 05) scripted history at Mount Maunganui as they thrashed Tom Latham-led New Zealand by 8 wickets.
Coming off a dismal series against Pakistan in home, not many expected Bangladesh to even be competitive against the Black Caps in New Zealand. But smashing all the “ifs and buts”, Bangladesh went on to register a comprehensive win over the World Test Champions in their own backyard.
Before this Test, Bangladesh had lost all 32 of their fixtures in New Zealand across all three formats. But this time, the visitors produce a sensational performance to record a historic win against the World Test champions.
Bangladesh, following this victory have also become the first Asian team to beat New Zealand in New Zealand in Tests since Pakistan’s 10-wicket victory in Hamilton back in January 2011.
Thanks to Ebadot Hossain’s 6-wicket haul in the 2nd innings and a brilliant batting display in the first innings, Bangladesh registered victory in the first session on Day 5.
Chasing 40 to win on the morning session on Day 5, Bangladesh lost openers Shadman Islam and Najmul Hossain Shanto early but captain Mominul Haque and senior batter Mushfiqur Rahim took them past the finish line.
Ebadot Hossain has been adjudged Player of the Match award for his brilliant bowling spell (6/46).
Who Said What?
Bangladesh Captain, Mominul Haque:
It was teamwork. Everyone was keen to win the match and they put their hand up in all three departments. We won because of the bowlers, both in the first and second innings they were outstanding. They did all the hard work and bowled in the right areas. He [Ebadot] was unbelievable for us. We didn’t play well in the last couple of Test matches and it was important to put our legacy to the next level. We have to forget about this win and look forward to the Christchurch Test.
New Zealand Captain, Tom Latham:
We weren’t quite there in all three facets. Bangladesh showed us how to go about things on that wicket. They were able to build partnerships, bowl [tight] at both ends and apply lots of pressure.
We couldn’t quite do it for long enough. There’s only been two Test matches here, the two games have been similar. Probably a little bit slower than what we expected and didn’t quite break up as much. Unfortunately we couldn’t things for long enough. Looking back at the first innings, the position we were in, if we’d got 450, then it’d have been a different story.
Full credit to Bangladesh the way they went about things for all five days and they thoroughly deservedly this win. It hurts, we got to turn to Christchurch in a few days’ time, hopefully we can take the learnings from this Test and apply them to what would be a different surface in Hagley. Hopefully we can put out a better performance there.
Player of the Match, Ebadot Hossain:
We have come here for the last 11 years and not won a game. When we came this time, we set a goal and we said to ourselves we can do it. New Zealand are Test Champions and if we beat them then it will inspire the next generation to do the same. I have been working hard with Ottis Gibson. The conditions are too flat in Bangladesh and we are still learning how to bowl away from home. I am a soldier of Bangladesh and know how to celebrate [after a wicket]. My journey from volleyball to cricket is a long story. I am enjoying my cricket.
