PAK vs ENG: Joe Root Scores Double Century Against Pakistan, Equals Virat Kohli’s World Record
England Star Joe Root Breaks Records and Continues to Shine in Test Cricket
Joe Root, the former captain of England’s Test team, has once again proven his class with the bat. During the first Test against Pakistan in Multan, the 33-year-old right-hander scored his sixth double century.
Joe Root’s Record-Breaking Milestone
Root’s magnificent innings of 200+ runs placed him in elite company. He overtook Alastair Cook on the list of English batters with the most Test double centuries. Now, Root is just one double hundred away from matching the legendary Walter Hammond, who holds the England record with seven double tons.
Most Test Double Centuries for England:
- Walter Hammond – 7
- Joe Root – 6
- Alastair Cook – 5
- Leonard Hutton – 4
A 20,000 Run Milestone
On Day 4 of the Test match, Root also crossed another milestone by becoming the first England batter to surpass 20,000 international runs. He joined an exclusive club, becoming only the 13th player in cricket history to achieve this remarkable feat. Root also became the second active cricketer, after India’s Virat Kohli, to amass 20,000 runs across all formats.
Active Players with the Most International Runs:
- Virat Kohli – 27,041 runs in 535 matches
- Joe Root – 20,000 runs* in 350 matches
Breaking England’s Test Record
Earlier in the same Test match, Root surpassed Alastair Cook’s record to become England’s all-time leading run-scorer in Test cricket. His 12,472 Test runs were overtaken as Root played another masterclass innings against Pakistan’s bowling attack. This achievement came after Root had a relatively quiet 2022 tour of Pakistan, scoring only one fifty in three matches. However, he came back stronger, leading England’s fightback against Pakistan’s first-innings total of 556 with a “daddy hundred.”
Eyeing Tendulkar’s Record?
With over 1000 runs already scored in the calendar year, Root has established himself as a consistent performer for England. His recent performances have ignited talks about whether he could one day break Sachin Tendulkar’s all-time Test record of 15,921 runs.
