“Retirement” – Fakhar Zaman Opens Up on Health Issues After Pakistan’s Elimination from Champions Trophy

Fakhar Zaman has dismissed retirement rumors, stating that he needs time to recover from his injury but is eager to return to cricket.

Pakistan batter Fakhar Zaman has denied rumors of his retirement after his team’s early exit from the Champions Trophy 2025. The left-handed opener made it clear that he is not stepping away from international cricket but admitted that his return could take some time due to health concerns.

Fakhar Zaman Clears Retirement Speculation

Fakhar was ruled out of the tournament after suffering a lower back injury in Pakistan’s opening match against New Zealand. Despite his injury, he batted and scored 24 off 41 balls but looked uncomfortable throughout his innings.

Speaking to PCB Digital (via ESPNcricinfo), Zaman addressed the retirement rumors:

“I’ve heard the retirement rumours too, and even received messages from friends about it, but there’s no need to be concerned. ODI is my favourite format. Yes, with my thyroid issue, it might take me a bit more time to get back into it, but I’m eager to play T20s, ODIs, and even Tests again. I’ve consulted with the doctor, and I can start playing cricket again within a month.”

Fakhar Reflects on His Champions Trophy Campaign

Fakhar had high hopes for this tournament, especially after his match-winning 114 against India in the 2017 Champions Trophy final. However, things did not go as planned this time.

The aggressive opener also spoke about the importance of adapting to match situations and taking calculated risks in modern-day cricket.

“The key factor is the situation you’re in. Chasing 150-200 runs requires a different mindset compared to chasing 350. But strike rate is crucial, especially now. You have to take risks in today’s fast-paced cricket, as all teams approach it that way. If you take those risks, you can score, but of course, there’s also a chance you’ll lose your wicket.”

The last league stage match of Pakistan was called off due to rain.
