Sunil Gavaskar Lashes Out At Australia Technology After Yashasvi Jaiswal’s Controversial Dismissal

Sunil Gavaskar expressed his disappointment over Yashasvi Jaiswal’s dismissal during his commentary.

Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal’s dismissal on Day 5 of the Boxing Day Test against Australia sparked a major debate. Jaiswal, who was batting on 84 from 207 balls, was given out caught behind despite no spike being detected on the Snickometer.

The incident occurred in the 71st over of India’s run chase when Pat Cummins bowled a short delivery. Although the on-field umpire ruled it not out, Cummins opted for a DRS review.

Replays showed no evidence of an edge on Snickometer, but the third umpire still overturned the decision, declaring Jaiswal out. The controversial call shifted the momentum of the game and left cricket fans and experts questioning the use of technology.

Sunil Gavaskar Criticizes the Decision

Legendary Indian batter Sunil Gavaskar expressed his disappointment during his commentary on Australia’s 7Cricket. He questioned the reliability of technology in such critical moments.

Gavaskar remarked, “If the technology is not to be taken, the evidence of the technology is not to be taken; why have it at all? That is something that would definitely be the query as far as the Indians are concerned.”

He further explained that what appeared to be a nick could have been an optical illusion.

He said, “Yes, it looked as if it might have gone off the glove, but there can be an optical illusion. Often, when the ball is brand new, it seems to nick the edge, but it doesn’t.”

Turning Point of the Match

Jaiswal’s dismissal proved to be the turning point in the game. Following his wicket, India lost three quick batters and eventually lost the match by 184 runs. The defeat has now placed India in a tough position in the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.

WTC 2025 Qualification Scenarios

India, currently third in the WTC 2023-25 points table, must win the final Test against Australia in Sydney to keep their hopes alive. Additionally, they will need Sri Lanka to defeat Australia 2-0 or 1-0 in the two-match Test series in February 2025 to secure a spot in the WTC final against South Africa.
