RR vs KKR: Why Is Sanju Samson Not the Captain of Rajasthan Royals Today?

Sanju Samson is not captaining Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2025 as he is still recovering from a finger injury and is playing only as a specialist batter.

Rajasthan Royals (RR) are facing Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in IPL 2025, and once again, Sanju Samson was missing at the toss. This means he will feature only as an Impact Player. In his absence, Riyan Parag has been named the stand-in captain for RR’s first three matches. The 23-year-old is leading the team in Guwahati, his home ground.

Sanju Samson Playing Only As A Batter

RR are batting first against KKR, which means Samson will bat and then be substituted by an Impact Player during the bowling innings. This is because he is still recovering from a right index finger injury sustained during the fifth T20I against England.

He underwent surgery last month and has completed his rehab at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. However, he has not yet been cleared for wicketkeeping and fielding duties, so he is playing only as a specialist batter.

When Will Sanju Samson Lead RR Again?

According to reports, Samson is close to full fitness and is expected to return as RR’s captain on April 5 against Punjab Kings in Chandigarh. Until then, Riyan Parag will continue to lead the team.
