Shreyas Iyer Set to Return to Indian Cricket Team for Sri Lanka Tour

Shreyas Iyer was excluded from BCCI’s central contract earlier this year.

Despite not being awarded a central contract by the BCCI, Shreyas Iyer’s exceptional performance in the IPL 2024 could earn him a spot in the Indian team for the upcoming Sri Lanka tour.

In addition to his stellar T20 performance, Iyer is in contention for India’s series against Zimbabwe in July 2024. If reports are accurate, Gautam Gambhir might also debut as India’s head coach.

Notably, Shreyas Iyer overcame a back injury to deliver a strong performance in the Asia Cup 2023. His contributions were pivotal during India’s journey to the final of the ODI World Cup 2023, although they fell short against Pat Cummins’ Australia.

“However, there is every possibility that Shreyas will travel for the three-match ODI series in Sri Lanka. The last ODI that India played was in South Africa and he scored a half-century (52). He had 500 plus runs (530) in World Cup and averages just around 50. Can you drop him?” a BCCI source was quoted as saying by The Times of India.

After the T20 World Cup, India’s focus will shift to the longer formats of the game, with upcoming series like the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, featuring a compelling five-Test series against Australia.

India’s ODI team will also be in action ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy’s return in early 2025, hosted by defending champions Pakistan.
